Australian households today own on average 2.4 televisions and according to the Bureau of Statistics, this figure is expected to rise to 3.1 by next year, whilst the average household is predicted to shrink to 2.4 people in 2011. Yes – that means there will soon be move Televisions than people in the average Australia household. Scary hey?
In 2009 Australians purchased 2.7 million televisions, with LCD units outselling plasmas by a ratio of 3.5 to one. Sales of televisions larger than 40 inches have recorded a growth of 75 per cent during the past year, and interestingly 46-to 50- inch televisions are now considered the norm.
The launch of the 3D television has contributed to the decline in price of regular televisions, as since May last year the cost of televisions has dropped on average by $700.
Samsung’s head of marketing consumer electronics, Mark Leathan, said “a top-of-the-range unit that sold for $3999 last year was now available with 3D capability for less than $3700.”
Today average Australian households are turning over their televisions at a quicker rate than in the past, and compared with the original cathode-ray units, which were used for an average of ten years, flat-screen models are now being updated every five years.
